How Complicated is Live Shipping Rate Calculation during Checkout

My biggest problem with Big Commerce is something is wrong with the code at checkout and they are not trying to fix it, so I am losing 3-4 customers a day and very angry customers at that. I don’t so much care about the lost sales, I care most about the customer and its embarrassing. Big Commerce is one of those companies that you talk about in your videos (I have watched many), they just want to keep harvesting new customers. I am considering switching the template which is easy just to see if the code fixes itself but I feel it is something in the servers.

Let me tell you a little story about the checkout process. It is the most critical and fragile thing in an ecommerce platform. In fact it is so fragile that I specifically asked my developer to carbon copy me any reports of any errors that happen on any Shopping Cart Elite store during checkout directly to one of my mailboxes and I review them along daily. The checkout is extremely critical and important that it works perfectly for everyone. This is the final phase of the sales and it is a horrible event to make that last step fail.

You see the checkout portion has TOO MANY points of failures. Some of them we have control over and some we don’t.

 We don’t control this and must find workarounds

1)      UPS/USPS/FEDEX Live Rates

2)      PAYMENT GATEWAY

3)      THIRD PARTY FRAUD TOOLS

4)      THIRD PARTY API from Google Checkout/Paypal

5)      Failed Browser Sessions (when user times out and returns)

6)      SSL connection

7)      GEO IP location that was not found

8)      Conflicting shipping services selected

 

We do control this but it also requires the customer or the store owner to participate

1)      Correct information entered not to corrupt anything

2)      Correct shipping address

3)      Misspelling for zipcodes and cities

4)      Correct supplier information

 

We do control this internally but their are cases where a conflict would create a point of failure that we must overcome

1)      Combining all items with correct shipping amounts

2)      Correct insurance or warranty amounts

3)      Combine Items

4)      Consolidate Items

5)      Pick out the correct boxes for shipping if supplied

6)      Pick the correct supplier and warehouse based on inventory

7)      Correct zip code databases to offer proper country / city location

8)      Taxes on certain items and not others

9)      Surcharges for certain items and not others

 

The list goes on and on. I think over the period of 3 years, we have probably invested over 400 hours in improving the checkout and we still find ourselves fixing something minor each month.

So the fact that your checkout is failing and Big Commerce is doing nothing doesn’t surprise me, you would need a full time developer to handle that task alone.

Considering they have HUNDREDS of cool templates developed by Indians Outsourcers who know nothing about their system, it’s impossible to maintain all of them, so even of they have a full time developer it still wouldn’t work.

 I would not be surprised to find out that out of all the Shopping Carts who offer hundreds of templates that they rely on the user to maintain or third party developer to maintain, take all their clients combined and you will find them losing hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars in lost sales because each year.

3DCart, Volusion, Core Commerce, etc. Bandwidth limits are a JOKE! Don’t let the pretty Graphics Fool You

Hundreds of Shopping Carts on the market and literally 95% of them are crap. In fact I did a review 2 years ago on random 45 Shopping Carts check it out here. Sure my opinion might be bias but go ahead …prove me wrong!

If you are looking for a Shopping Cart and you are just TOTALLY confused by all of them, I don’t blame you. In this blog post I will show you something that none of them will show until its TOO LATE.

BANDWIDTH LIMITS aka TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE

You probably have no clue what these number mean or how much you bandwidth you actually need. This is where the SCHEME occurs. They trick you into believing you get X amount of visitors while in reality it is a total opposite. Let me share some analytics.

All them offer a bandwidth plan that does not exceed 20GB for their most expensive package.

The website on the screen shot below got only 2,536 visitors in one month. Those visitors went through 43,000 pages. Search Engine Crawlers went through 22,197 pages.

Now it is very hard to predict how many pageviews you will have. It all depends on your website. If you are a niche store, for every visitor you will get X amount of pageviews. In the website below, every visitor on average went through 16 pages before leaving the website. You might have a website where only 2 pages are triggered for each visitor.

Now if you haven’t watched my videos on what you need to succeed, I mentioned what kind of traffic you need to get, in order to get X amount of orders. This was based on my personal store results.

These are typical results if you have a popular product, targeted traffic, and competitive prices:

  • 50 Unique Daily Visitors / 1500 Unique Monthly Visitors = 1-2 orders per week
  • 100 Unique Daily Visitors / 3000 Unique Monthly Visitors = 3-4 orders per week
  • 200 Unique Daily Visitors / 6000 Unique Monthly Visitors = 1 order per day or every other day
  • 300 Unique Daily Visitors / 9000 Unique Monthly Visitors = 1 order per day
  • 400 Unique Daily Visitors / 12000 Unique Monthly Visitors = 2-5 order per day
  • etc.

So considering that the most expensive plan they have will cap you at 1 order per day… I really don’t see how they can have thousands of successful clients or why anyone would even sign up with them, KNOWING that they will get capped and wont be able to expand further.

None of the Shopping Carts mentioned, even offer a plan that would handle this website, and this website is considered small time compared to its competitors.

You know why they dont even offer a service for a website like this? Because their SERVERS WONT HANDLE IT!!!! Who can handle 4.3 MILLION REQUESTS without a web farm? They have these crappy $2,000 - $4,000 shared servers operating tens if not hundreds of clients on the same one.

I am not even going to talk about the RIP OFF that comes after you go over your limits, which BTW none of them are advertising them to the public. I could not find the overage rates visible on any Shopping Cart websites. I can assure one thing though that once you do go over and you will if you want to see even a slight chance of success, you are going to get a HOLY FIELD KNOCK OUT by that Shopping Cart as soon as you do.

WHY SO LITTLE COMPLAINTS?

So why are there no complaints? Because they specifically designed their service to make sure their clients DO NOT SUCCEED! The customer starts the website, then 3-6 months down the line the website doesnt sell anything, so the customer  quits and the next one signs up. ITS A PERFECT CYCLE!

The entrepreneur feels that they failed because it’s their own fault. They think that they were using the STATE OF THE ART SHOPPING CART with THOUSANDS OF SUCCESSFUL CUSTOMERS and all those Mobile Commerce and Social Commerce FEATURES (COMPLETE CRAP THAT DOESNT WORK) had to do the job, and at the end they failed….

How about the fact that each one of them advertises Google Adwords as the primary source of traffic?

SERIOUSLY???? WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND NEW STARTS UP TO PAY FOR TRAFFIC. NOT ONLY DID YOU STEAL THEIR MONEY, BUT NOW YOU WANT GOOGLE TO STEAL THEIR MONEY?

New Startups need to set up their website and make sure FREE TRAFFIC will convert first before they pay for it. We would never advise and NEVER HAVE advised our clients to pay for their TRAFFIC, BEFORE! they built up their FREE ORGANIC traffic and were fully confident it converted.

Each of them sells these SEO services which are not only overpriced, but a complete rip off because they clearly DO NOT WORK if you know anything about SEO. However they have been selling it anyway for years!

I also hate the fact that these WANNABEs are COPYING US… I put 15 day trial, they put 15 day trial. I put a video on the homepage, they put a video on the homepage.
